Don’t miss this:

A woman’s handbag is highly personal. For some of us, it’s an extension of our identity, our life vest, our biggest fashion statement and our personal assistant. Why else do you think so many women will throw down hundreds of dollars on designer or rare vintage bags?

The Boulder History Museum is looking into this odd fact of the women’s world this month through Nov. 30 in an exhibit centered around handbags, “Pocketbook Anthropology: A Treasure of Handbags.”

The exhibit delves into purses’ role in society, even featuring presentations about “women’s intimate relationship with their purses” and how purse designs parallel technology.

The museum is showcasing more than 50 bags from 1880 to today, made out of silk to beads to cigarette packs to metal.

The exhibit also features anecdotes, quotes and quips about purses, as well as Boulder-based purse designers and manufacturers.

Check out www.boulderhistorymuseum.org.

“Present yourself – as though you were a gift.” It’s quite a notion. Inspirational, uplifting and the name of a fund-raiser being held by the non-profit organization, Courage is Change.

On April 14, Courage is Change will host a fund-raiser at the Drafthouse, formerly Redfish, in Boulder.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. attendees will be treated to music by SugarDaddy and comedy by Nancy Norton. Tickets are $50 for one, $95 for a couple. For a $150, you will receive two tickets and your name on the sponsor board. $250 scores you all of the above with your name and logo on the Courage is Change Web site and marketing materials for the event. Each ticket comes with two drink tickets for wine or beer and heavy appetizers. Tickets can only be purchased at www.courageischange.org

With only 250 tickets, it’s sure to sell out quickly.

Proceeds will benefit Courage is Change. Courage is Change plans on using the money raised to increase awareness about the non-profit as well as develop middle and high school curriculum for ethics courses that promote the purpose of the organization, which is to end the cycle of generational violence through discourse, empowerment, education and community building.

The Bay Area of the 1960s is a time and place etched in American history. It had a sound and culture all its own: tie-dye, LSD and the Grateful Dead. Peace, love and flower power. A counter-culture fueled by eastern philosophy and acid rock.

Thanks to the work of cutting-edge graphic artists such as Wes Wilson and others, that moment in time had its own unique look as well — a tapestry of vibrant colors, richly textured images and a chaotic, silly string-like font that was as much optical illusion as advertisement.

It’s a style we now know as psychedelic, and the artwork of this period is celebrated in the Denver Art Museum’s new exhibit, “The Psychedelic Experience: Rock Posters from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1965-71,” which runs through July 19.

The exhibit features more than 300 posters promoting Bay Area concerts from that time, from headlining acts like Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Jimi Hendrix to era-defining events like the Trips Festival, the Haight-Ashbury Festival and Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests. The names and venues are part of the rock ‘n’ roll pantheon: promoters Bill Graham and Chet Helms and Family Dog Productions, the Fillmore Auditorium, the Avalon Ballroom.

If you go
