“Maggie: The dog who changed my life,” by Dawn Kairns

About family? Yes, if you consider your dog family.

By a local author? Yes.

Timely? Not particularly, although “animals are such gifts to us,” the Web site says. The book is about a black lab, Maggie, who helps the author find her place in the world.

Poems? No.



“Letter to my daughter,” by Maya Angelou

About family? Yes.

By a local author? No.

Timely? Maybe. The book contains Angelou’s life lessons, some of which might bring useful lessons to help endure the holidays.

Poems? A few.



“I like you: Hospitality under the influence,” by Amy Sedaris

About family? Yes.

By a local author? No.

Timely? Yes. This book is a funny guide to throwing parties. Tip: Put marbles in your medicine cabinet to deter nosy guests. This book is new in paperback as of Oct. 22.

Poems? No, although some might say the humor is poetic.



“The truro bear and other adventures: Poems and essays,” by Mary Oliver

About family? No. By a local author? No.

Timely? No. This book is a collection of short writings about mammals, insects and reptiles.

Poems? Oh yes. Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1983.





“The kindness handbook: A practical handbook,” by Sharon Salzberg

About family? Yes. It encompasses all relationships.

By a local author? No. Salzberg is also a meditation instructor.

Timely? Yes. “Kindness is the fuel that will help you ‘walk your talk’ of love — daily,” Salzberg writes. A great Thanksgiving book.

Poems? No.
